Don't Tread on Me

First flown aboard a Colonial Troop ship on January 4th, 1776. This was the flag of the American Colonies at the time of the American Revolution against England. features a rattlesnake above the warning, "DON'T TREAD ON ME". The rattlesnake had become a traditional symbol of the American Colonies. The most obvious reason for this is that the rattlesnake was only found in the American Colonies (and in abundance, to the dismay of settlers) and nowhere else in the world. The origin of the slogan (Don't Tread On Me) pertains to the snake's deadly strike and the idea that it is best to leave them alone.

Future Map of Israel?

Is this the new map of Israel. There is still plenty of negotiating to be done. This map was part of the Oslo proposal whereby Israel would gradually withdraw from the Gaza strip and West Bank. Palestinians hoped it would result in their statehood. Terrorist attacks resulted in the breakdown of the process. Remember that Palestinian Arabs fought against the 1948 UN Resolution 181 which partitioned the territory into two states. The Arabs lost that war and the Palestinian state partition was taken over by Israel and Jordan.

This was the result of the 1967 war.

Tupi Subsalt Field, Brazil

This is the subsalt field that put Brazil back in play. president Obama has indicated that the U.S. could become the biggest consumer if Brazilian oil.

Historical Rig Count

Take out the spike in 1982 and it looks like the high active rig count is in the 2500 to 3000 range. Of course we can drill much faster these days, but the horizontal  wells take longer to complete.

National Limerick Day

Today is national Limericks Day. Here's a taste:

There once was a girl from Natchez,
Whose clothing was always in patches,
When she was asked why,
She said with a sigh,
Cause when I itches, I scratches!

House Passes Bill Speeding Up Oil and Gas Exploration - NYTimes.com: "WASHINGTON — Maneuvering on oil drilling, gas prices and industry profits intensified on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. House Republicans pushed through a bill to accelerate offshore oil and gas exploration as Democrats vowed action on measures to rescind billions of dollars in tax breaks for major oil and gas companies"
How far do you think this will go?

Monterey Shale Play... working?

The Monterey shale is in play. Venoco and OXY have a 3-D seismic shoot planned. There is an abundance of well data for the Monterey, so the next step is tying the producing reservoir data to seismic. If plays follows a similar learning curve, expect longer horizontal laterals and more frac stimulation stages.  This will ultimately extend the play from a combination trap to a pure unconventional shale play.

Kodiak: Bakken Drill and Completion

Longer laterals and more frac stages are better. Whiting Petroleum would like to increase their frac stages from 26 to 30.

Kirkuk Oil Field, Iraq

Kirkuk: Anatomy of an Iraqi Oil Field in Kurdistan (From GeoExpro)

The Kirkuk oil field is a 100-km long and 12-km wide anticline consisting of three domes and two saddles. It is located in the Zagros Simply Folded Zone (this term does not exclude thrusting, salt diapirs, or strike slip faults). The 1927 discovery (Baba Gurgur # 1) was located on the Baba Dome and produced from the Oligocene "Main limestone." Later drilling discovered two deeper payzones in the Cretaceous. The Paleogene shallow-marine carbonates represent a major change from the Cretaceous deep-sea (flysch) sediments of the Tethys Ocean to the purely continental sediments of the Neogene Fars Group. Majid and Veizer (AAPG Bulletin, July 1986) have described the sedimentology of the Paleogene carbonate payzones in the Kirkuk field. These rocks were deposited in near-shore (mudstone, wackstone, packstone and grainstone), fore-slope (packstone and grainstone) and basinal (mudstone and wackstone) environments. Porosity is both primary (inter-granular and inter-skeletal) and secondary (tectonic fractures and chemical dissolution). Porosity varies 4-36% and permeability ranges 50-1000 millidarcy.
