Historical Rig Count
Take out the spike in 1982 and it looks like the high active rig count is in the 2500 to 3000 range. Of course we can drill much faster these days, but the horizontal wells take longer to complete.

Who wants a Gulf of mexico drilling permit, I do, I do. Well MMS has doubled the number of permits issued in march 2011, from one to Noble to two, to BHP, there must a drilling boom going on out there!
